Los persas

Los persas

Esquilo

Aeschylus (c. 525-456 BC) is the oldest author whose complete tragedies are preserved. Born in Eleusis, in Attica, he wrote just over eighty tragedies, of which only seven have survived. He was also a soldier in a difficult time when Athens lived under the threat of Persian invasion, and participated in some of the determining battles of the Persian Wars. Precisely, The Persians stages one of the famous battles in which the tragic poet himself participated: that of Salamis. Away from mythological elements and the Hellenic heroic tradition, the ardent patriotism that permeates the work does not prevent Aeschylus from adopting a certain moderation. His sensitivity in dealing with the terrible consequences of war also leads him to soften the differences between Hellenes and "barbarians", and to feel pity in the face of misfortune.
