Los guardianes del Prado
Alandes, Javier
In 1936, the ambitious General Gallardo, appointed by Franco to negotiate compensation for Germany's support in the Spanish Civil War, meets with Nazi General Jurgen Von Schimmer, a representative of the German government, to try to reach an agreement. But what he asks in return is almost impossible: for German aviation to bomb key points in Spain, the extremely valuable collection of gold coins in the National Archaeological Museum; for sending the Nazi ground troops, which will end the war with a stroke of the pen, Dürer's Self-Portrait that rests in El Prado, and... Las Meninas. Gallardo, prisoner of excessive ambition, accepts this deal at his own risk and, together with a group of unscrupulous men, orchestrates a plan to seize all that National Heritage and hand it over to the Nazis. In 1980, Fernando Poveda, a journalist in low hours, was commissioned to write a report on Félix Santurce, a Valencian businessman who collaborated with the Republican Government during the Civil War, who in 1937 was executed in Berlin by General Jurgen Von Schimmer while requesting neutrality. of Germany in the Spanish war. The Valencia City Council wants to pay a posthumous tribute to the businessman in his capacity as hero and martyr of the Republic. The journalist will begin an investigation into the life of Santurce, which will lead him to discover an organized plot to rob Las Meninas, a painting that was in Valencia in 1936. A complex network of betrayals and lies, where corrupt officials, smugglers and soldiers, they were capable of anything for money and power. In his search for him, Fernando will also come across the story of Alejandro Santoro, a young architect appointed by the Government as custodian of the paintings in Valencia. With strong convictions of duty and honor, Alejandro will know love, and will live the horror of a cruel war, entering fully into the conflict due to the plan to steal the paintings that he guards. And he will come into contact with the figure of Mateo Aguirre, the man appointed to carry out the robbery of Las Meninas in Valencia. Will Alejandro manage to stop the most important art theft in history?
