The Great Initiates: A Study in the Secret History of Religions dates back to 1889 and is the masterpiece of French writer Édouard Schuré. This work describes the path followed according to Schuré by important founders of ancient religions and other renowned ancient philosophers, called Initiates, in the search for esoteric knowledge, as it was understood and interpreted by the French writer. The initiates mentioned in the work are: Rama, Krishna, Hermes Trismegistus, Moses, Orpheus, Pythagoras, Plato, Zoroaster, Jesus Christ and Buddha.
