Los ensayos
según la edición de 1595 de Marie de Gournay
Montaigne, Michel de
In 1580, Michel de Montaigne released the first edition of his two books of The Essays. The success was so overwhelming that, two years later, a new edition appeared, augmented by a third book and with notable additions and corrections in the first two. Thus the writing of one of the books that has had the greatest prestige and influence on Western thought was completed. However, the Perigordine gentleman continued to work on the text of his essays until his death in 1592. Three years later, Marie de Gournay, Montaigne's "fille d'alliance", presented an edition of The Essays following the instructions given. It was given its author, an edition that for centuries has been considered canonical, until Strowski prepared his between 1906 and 1933. Today, Marie de Gournay's is seen again, with justice, as the reference text, and serves as the basis to all reliable recent editions. This is also the one that the Hispanic reader will find in this edition, enriched with references to the multiple stages that the text experienced and with a complete apparatus of notes. A useful edition for the specialist and close to the common reader.
