Late spring of the year 1539; Carlos of Austria, emperor of Germany and king of Spain and the Indies, locks himself up, desperate for the death of his wife Isabel, in a monastery near Toledo. Meanwhile, his enemies threaten his power and his dominions. In his native Ghent, merchants rebel in protest at excessive taxes. The Turks advance towards Europe and gain positions in the Mediterranean. Protestants question his authority. France and the Pope are hostile to him. But Carlos reacts. With the old thirds as a force of shock, he achieves shining victories, he falls in love with a young German woman with whom he will have his last son and dreams that one day his heir Felipe will become the owner of the world. After defeating the Protestant princes at the Battle of Mühlberg, the emperor reached the peak of his reign, but immediately suffered a severe physical decline that, together with several defeats and not a few setbacks, forced him to abdicate as emperor and king, in between of an underground fight for power and intrigue for succession.Old, tired and sick, Carlos from Austria retires to the Yuste monastery, where he will live his last two years of life immersed in melancholy and memories.
