Lo obvio y lo obtuso

imágenes, gestos y voces

Barthes, Roland

In any attempt at expression we can distinguish three levels: the level of communication, that of meaning, which always remains on a symbolic plane, on the plane of signs, and the level that Roland Barthes calls of significance. But in the symbolic sense, which remains at the level of signs, it is possible to distinguish two facets that are somewhat contradictory: the first is intentional (it is neither more nor less than what the author has wanted to say), as if taken from a lexicon general of symbols; it is a clear and patent sense that does not need exegesis of any kind, it is what is before the eyes, the obvious sense. But there is another sense, the added one, the one that comes to be like a kind of supplement that the intellect does not manage to assimilate, stubborn, elusive, stubborn, slippery. Barthes proposes calling it the obtuse sense.
