Economic freedom is an essential requirement for political freedom. This is the central thesis of Freedom to Choose, written in four hands by Milton and Rose Friedman. By allowing individuals to cooperate voluntarily, the free market system limits the coercive power of the state and acts as a dispersing force that prevents large concentrations of economic power in a few hands. Not only the liberalized economy acts as a brake on tyranny. Also, as the Friedmans show, it is the economic system that has allowed the highest levels of economic prosperity and individual freedom in history. But the economic miracle and the drive for innovation began to suffer as soon as, starting in the 20th century, the State began to grow without limits and take charge of centrally directing economic activities that were previously in charge of the market. Milton and Rose Friedman show how an oversized state not only hampers economic growth, but also represents a serious threat to our freedoms. To the paternalistic, interventionist and controlling State, the authors oppose the values ??of individual responsibility and initiative, personal autonomy and freedom of choice, and call us not to give up our freedom in exchange for a chimerical security.
