Leyendas de los mapas
una lectura geopoética de la cartografía
García Martín, Pedro (1957- )
The word legend has two meanings: one, cartographic, which explains the symbols on the map; and the other, the literary or written, that arises from the map itself and feeds the fantasy of those who contemplate it and makes their imagination fly. The author uses these legends, the literary ones, to take a journey through the history of maps, from the first ones that were drawn, the ideograms of petroglyphs and clay tablets or papyrus of antiquity, to the detailed and interactive ones of the Today's Google Maps. In the first part of this book, Pedro García Martín takes a chronological and spatial journey through the history of maps and their philosophical and cultural interpretation. In the second part, he focuses on iconography, that is, on map codes (titles, colors, allegories). Finally, the third part is dedicated to three issues that have always been related: maps, literature and travel. Within each of these three parts, the offer that is made to the reader is so varied and extensive that no one will be disappointed.
