Las transiciones de UCD
triunfo y desbandada del centrismo (1978-1983)
Ortega Díaz-Ambrona, Juan Antonio
This book, a continuation of his previous work, Memorial de transiciones (1939-1978), deals with the foundation and sowing of current democracy between 1978 and 1983. The agents of change were many, among them the UCD, born of a rapid process of incorporation of valuable people, who triumphed in two general elections and then suffered a rapid, sad and unprecedented rout. The author describes the social changes at the end of the Franco regime and portrays with insight and closeness the personality of the presidents Adolfo Suárez and Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, their opponents Felipe González and Alfonso Guerra, and other politicians. It describes the legal and institutional renovation that was carried out, the impact of terrorism and violence during the Transition, including that of 23-F. It also presents an analysis of the complex world of education, its actors, aspirations and conflicts, as well as the evolution of collective identities in autonomous Spain and of nationalism. Relying on nothing or little-known documents, Juan Antonio Ortega Díaz-Ambrona exposes the centrist project without complacency or self-flagellation, and tells an autobiographical story about the successes and failures of UCD, whose legacy he believes is positive and respectable for new generations .
