Las profecías de Jeremías

Ben Shimon, Yosef Caro

The vision of Jerusalem reduced to rubble moves the heart of the prophet, who takes up the pen and writes his poetic lament: "How the city of numerous people has become lonely! Certainly she cries at night, and her tear is on her cheeks; no she is comforted by all who loved her". Traditionally attributed to Jeremiah, The Book of Lamentations -or Eijá, by its name in Hebrew- is made up of five poems that describe the suffering of seeing the city in which the Shechina dwelled collapsed, to the point of wondering if he has not decided HaShem withdraw his favor to his people because of his many transgressions. The Jews return year after year on this painful question on the occasion of Tisha b'Av, a solemn date in which the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem is remembered, studying this text that deals with transgression, guilt, repentance and forgiveness. Rabbi Aharon Shlezinger offers readers the chance to descend into the depths of this moving work with an edition commented verse by verse by Rabbi Yosef Caro ben Shimon. This Jewish scholar born in the mid-11th century in northern France was one of Rashi's outstanding pupils. In his comments he reflects on the words of the prophet, analyzes Jeremiah's poetics from tradition and provides the reader with an explanation of the reasons for the destruction of the Temple and the fall from Jerusalem in disgrace.
