Las hijas de Carlos V
María y Juana de Austria
Velasco Kindelán, Magdalena
María and Juana de Austria, daughters of Carlos V and his wife Isabella, were two powerful women in the middle of the 16th century. Both her father and her brother, Felipe II, gave them government responsibilities. By marriage, Maria became Empress of Austria and Juana, Princess of Portugal and mother of King Sebastián. Today, the memory of these two princesses has been lost in the mists of history. However, her memory has been preserved almost intact to us thanks to a time capsule: the Madrid monastery of Las Descalzas Reales, the community of Poor Clare nuns founded by Juana and inhabited by María, and where both are buried. This novel recreates the life, thoughts and feelings of these two women, educated, beautiful and close to power and wealth.
