Las futbolistas que desafiaron a Mussolini

Seneghini, Federica

Rosetta is sixteen years old and in her heart beats an overflowing passion for soccer; Giovanna has the same love for calcium, whose practice is for her also a political gesture; Marta, wise and deliberate, is determined to defend tooth and nail her right to go out on the field of play, just like the stubborn Lucchi, whose father forbids her from approaching a ball. These are some of the girls who were part of the gang of friends who, in the early thirties, gave life to the Gruppo Calciatrici Milanese, the first Italian women's football team. But in those years Italy was under the yoke of fascism, and was not prepared to accept a phenomenon that soon began to arouse the attention of the newspapers and unhinged the regime. What were some girls doing practicing a sport for men? How dare they neglect their "primary function as mothers" to run after a ball? This book tells the story of these soccer pioneers, their friendship, their fight against the Duce and against the prejudices of a society poisoned by fascism and submerged in a macho mentality that partly persists today. Between epic victories, harsh defeats, unexpected allies and staunch enemies, these girls claimed equality in sport before anyone else and took the first steps on a path, that of women's football, plagued by injustices and with miles and miles still to go.
