Hamburg, 1970. Henny celebrates her birthday surrounded by her family and inseparable friends. The thread of complicity that united her life with that of Käthe, Lina and Ida continues now in the new generations: Florentine, the model who returns from Paris with unexpected news; Katja, who dreams of photographing conflicts around the world; and Ruth, who struggles to break free from a stormy relationship. All of them, as their mothers and grandmothers did, share happiness and misery, seemingly trivial moments and those that determine their destinies. These are years of great events: the German people are divided, the Vietnam War lands in the middle of the world, a reborn extremism spreads and the fall of the Berlin Wall marks the end of fear. The friendship forged by four friends inspired her daughters to reach their place in the world and illuminated the fate of three young people at the beginning of a new era.
