Lamento de la paz
Erasmus, Desiderius
Written in Louvain in 1516 under the influence of Seneca's exordium "On Clemency", the Prince of Humanists exhorts emperors, kings, princes, bishops and priests to work, each according to his power, to put an end to conflicts that scourge the population and thus establish a lasting peace. Drafted in a Europe as opposed as in successive centuries, this text is a timeless appeal to the unity of the European peoples and a very up-to-date denunciation of the hidden motives of war and the exercise of power as a mere instrument to satisfy the personal ambitions of the powerful, which, despite not being the same, continue to exist and act in a similar way. An extraordinary reflection on the need for harmony.
