La vacuna
la carrera para desarrollar una vacuna contra la COVID-19
Türeci, Özlem
Sahin, Ugur
Nobody believed it was possible. However, in January 2020, U?ur ?ahin told Özlem Türeci, his wife and research partner of decades, that they would be able to develop a vaccine against what would soon be known as COVID-19 and safely inject it into the arms of millions of people before the year was out. That confidence was the fruit of almost thirty years of work. While searching for a revolutionary way to treat cancer, they had studied a molecule called messenger RNA, which they thought could be used to redirect the immune system against some diseases. Thanks to this previous research, by the time Sars-Cov-2 was discovered in Wuhan, the company was ready to develop cutting-edge technology and create the first clinically approved vaccine against the disease. A vaccine that, thanks to its alliance with Pfizer, began to be manufactured and distributed around the world much earlier than expected and, thanks to which, millions of human lives were saved.
