At the beginning of the 20th century, in Madrid, the owners and guests of the "La Universal" pension decide to set up a traveling circus company to move around the province and thus obtain money to survive in the midst of a great economic crisis caused by the loss of the colonies, the corruption of the rulers, the work stoppage, the hunger and the social revolts. Antón Ozaeta and Eulalia, the owners of the pension, a lawyer with no future, a retired city guard, a letter reader, an unemployed teacher, a charlatan anarchist, a good-hearted prostitute, two orphans and a dog make up the diverse cast. main character of this choral novel in which things are not what they seem, and in which the murder of a man from a wealthy family will be solved thanks to the efforts of the "universals".
