La última tarde de Paquirri

La última tarde de Paquirri

Gómez, Emilio

On Wednesday, September 26, 1984, a bull from the Sayalero and Bandrés ranch, named Avispado, mortally wounded Paquirri in the Pozoblanco bullring. He underwent emergency surgery in the plaza infirmary and was immediately transferred to Córdoba. But he never arrived. The body has already been admitted to the Military Hospital. That fuck was an earthquake in Spain at the time. Something out of the ordinary. The shock wave of the news caused an unknown commotion in the area of the festival and, by extension, in the society of that time, since Paquirri's recognized leadership in the bullfighting ranks was added to his enormous popularity and charisma. His greatness as a bullfighter is and will be inimitable. This book reflects what happened that afternoon from another perspective. It portrays Spain in the 1980s, after the transition, with the emergence of popular culture born of the new democracy with its new idols and icons, and a distinctly Spanish art: bullfighting. Paquirri gave us a life lesson. If, when something serious happened to us, we thought about how he dealt with that situation, we could minimize everything. He had been destroyed by a bull, and with complete calm, he fought. Without complaining. No screams. Without giving up. He faced his final moment with exemplary dignity, like a true hero.
