La subasta de Roma

La subasta de Roma

Monterroso, Alberto

The historical episode of the auction of the Roman Empire is a very relevant event in the history of humanity and, at the same time, extremely unknown. How far into decadence and degradation did it take for the Praetorians to auction off the throne of Rome?. What happened to make them dare to sell the Empire to the highest bidder? From what moment did the unstoppable decline begin? After the assassination of the sordid emperor Lucius Aurelius Commodus (180-192 AD), one of his trusted generals, a former commander of Marcus Aurelius, came to power, trying to redirect the situation by following the path laid out by the philosopher emperor, but who found it impossible to straighten the course. It is about Helvio Pértinax, who will suffer three conspiracies in the three months that his reign lasts. After him will come the "Auction of the Empire", the bid won by the extremely rich senator Didius Juliano, who ruled by force of his money, but whom the Praetorians also betrayed when Severus rose up in arms. This novel narrates, with extreme historical rigor, not without literary pulse, the reigns of these two emperors, Pértinax and Juliano, who occupied the throne for 87 and 66 days respectively, key figures in the history of Rome because they are at the origin of the slow and inexorable decline of the Empire.
