La revancha de los poderosos
cómo los autócratas están reinventando la política en el siglo XXI
Naím, Moisés
Around the world, democracies face a new and implacable enemy that has neither an army nor a navy; it doesn't come from any country that we can point to on a map, because it doesn't come from out there, but from here inside. Instead of challenging free societies with destruction from without, it threatens to corrode them from within. A danger like this is elusive, difficult to identify, to distinguish, to describe. We all notice it, but we have a hard time giving it a name. Rivers of ink are spilled to define its elements and characteristics, but it continues to elude us. Our duty, therefore, is to name it in order to understand it, combat it and defeat it. What is this new enemy that threatens our freedom, our prosperity and even our survival as democratic societies? The answer is power, in a new and evil way. In all ages there have been one or more forms of political evil; the one we are experiencing today is a vindictive variant that imitates democracy while undermining it and despising any limitation. It seems that power has studied all the controls conceived by free societies for centuries to avoid them and then fight back. That is why I can affirm that we are facing the revenge of the powerful.
