Among the many books dedicated to the history of the Second Spanish Republic and the Civil War, Gabriel Jackson stands out for two reasons: for being the result of ten years of research and for offering us a balanced view of events, avoiding the prejudices of the extreme right and the extreme left (which did not prevent it from being banned in Spain until the death of General Franco). Both qualities make it continue to be the best overview of those crucial years in the history of contemporary Spain today.
