La República Catalana (14 d'abril de 1931)
Bosch i Cuenca, Pere
On April 14, 1931 at noon, Lluís Companys proclaimed the Spanish Republic from the balcony of Barcelona City Hall. Learning of the events and angered by the unilateral gesture, Macià went to the council, from where he proclaimed, shortly after, the Catalan State within a Federation of Iberian Republics. Then, he entered the Palau de la Diputació General de Catalunya and went out on the balcony to announce that he was taking over the Government of Catalonia. Little by little the men of Esquerra made their way to Palau. Also the radical nationalists opposed to entering the brand new ERC who, despite everything, put themselves under Macià's orders to defend the Catalan Republic. The day ended with the proclamation also in Madrid of the Republic. Alfonso XIII had to go into exile.
