La Regenta

Above its formidable gallery of characters, is the city of Vetusta, an unequivocal transcript of Oviedo -where Clarín spent a good part of his life-, the true protagonist of La Regenta (1884-1885), which we recover here in an edition by Ignacio Echevarría . In it we witness the relentless siege that, under cover of the prevailing hypocrisy, tend to Ana Ozores, the Regent -a young beauty full of romantic fantasies, married to an older man who does not satisfy her longing for love-, a local dandy, vain of his well-crafted reputation as a ladies' man, and the ambitious priest destined to act as his spiritual director and to fall madly in love with her.
