The present work by Juan J. Linz, one of the most outstanding names in the social sciences of the 20th century, addresses the phenomenon of the crisis of democracies and the rise of authoritarian regimes within the framework of interwar Europe, with special emphasis on interest in the historical cases of Weimar Germany and the Second Spanish Republic. Work of capital importance for the renewal of studies on the challenges of contemporary democracies, Linz responds to deterministic theses, which interpreted the bankruptcy of democracies as a phenomenon predetermined by the outbreak of the Great Depression, underlining the importance of the variables specifically policies that explain the collapse of parliamentary systems in the interwar period.
