The orphaned princess Irene lives in a majestic castle on top of a mountain. Her father, the king, continually travels to distant countries, while under the mountain that crowns the castle, the miners work tirelessly to bring to light the deep riches of the earth. Irene, restless, dreamy, independent, is unable to wait patiently for her father's return, not only because the right place for a girl is not the embroidery room, but because, first, the cunning and perfidious goblins have conspired to kidnapping her and forcing her to marry her prince, and then, because the gift of guessing who is human and who is beast just by touching him that the great-more-than-grandmother has given to her friend Curdie, they have done nothing but complicate her life.
