Akar Kessell, an ambitious apprentice magician who has murdered his master, finds by chance, buried in the snow, the Crystal Stone, an evil object, lost for thousands of years and possessing almost infinite power. The Stone uses Kessell for his evil project and inspires him with the idea of creating an all-powerful army to conquer Ten Cities, a group of populations that live by fishing. Kessell gathers his host of monsters and launches them into the attack. However, the inhabitants of that place are not willing to be dominated and stand up to them according to Bruenor, the dwarf blacksmith; Wulfgar, a young barbarian; Drizzt Do'Urden, a dark elf who has renounced the evil ways of his kind and lives in the sunlight instead of dwelling in the depths of the earth; and, finally, with Regis, a thieving and opportunistic halfling with a big heart.
