La otra isla

Herreros de Tejada, Silvia

Although she has never set foot on the island, Lara hates Cuba: in her family it seems that everything revolves around that lost paradise. Her mother, Mirta, despite the fact that she has been in Spain for more than half a life, blames Cuba for her divorce, her economic ruin and her eccentricity. Aunt Letty, who did not run away with her wealthy family but stayed to support the Revolution, ended up being the most radical activist in Miami along with her husband Omar, a convinced counterrevolutionary, at least, during her Cuban life. After Fidel Castro's death in 2016, Mirta only thinks about returning to Cuba to take possession of her properties and recover the mysteriously disappeared family treasure: a gold crown that belonged to the writer Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, from which they descend. It will be then when Lara, in her forties, realizes how that island so far away and strange has marked the life of her mother, that of her uncles and even her own. With a brilliant and very original structure, in which present and past coexist, The Other Island takes us to the disenchanted Madrid of the 2000s, to the conspiranoic Miami of the 1990s and to the post-revolutionary Cuba of the 1960s. And, above all, it leads us to meet three exciting women, all three with secrets so undeniable that they have become their own islands.
