It's Christmas Eve and fifty-five-year-old Professor Pål Andersen is alone, drinking coffee and cognac in his living room. Lost in thought of him, he looks out the window and sees a man strangle a woman in the apartment across the street. Professor Andersen does not report the crime. Days go by and he is paralyzed by indecision... Solstad always shows a great ability to accurately represent mental processes. In this work, characterized by a peculiar ironic humor, the Norwegian author asks readers an uncomfortable question: would we also remain immobile?
