La niña santa
Blanco, Daniel
Like a biography, a hagiography, a costumbrista portrait of the Spain of the last century or a reflection on the weight of childhood. The holy girl is a story based on real events. In 1938, in the midst of the Civil War, a woman who is still young and already a widow takes refuge from the bombings that are destroying her town under her bed, embracing her four children. Her youngest, Consuelito, four years old, breaks free from her arms and runs to the door, screaming in terror. Her mother, because that's what mothers do, runs after her, followed by the other three. Just at that moment a bomb falls on the bedroom where they had been hiding until a few seconds ago. They are saved by the hair. The mother interprets it as a miracle and makes a promise: to dress her daughter in the habit of the Immaculate Conception until she is 18 years old. Since then, Consuelito will be known in the region as "the holy girl". The holy girl is a justification to talk about what we are and what is expected of us, to get to know a fearful and believing Spain and to reflect on the identity of women.
