Using an imaginative analysis but without losing a bit of rigor, this book reconstructs the repertoire of medieval music using a wide range of sources, which in many cases makes up for the lack of primary sources. In addition to highlighting the ceremonial and dramaturgical functions of medieval music both in the sacred and profane spheres, the author pays special attention to the exchange of musical ideas, the development of musical notation and other means of fixation and transmission, and the role of women in the musical culture of the time.
