Young engineer Hans Castorp plans a three-week visit to a cousin who is in a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, but the stay is unexpectedly extended to seven years. In the decadent atmosphere of the sanatorium, which Mann describes with almost morbid delight, Castorp reflects on life, death and love in a process of emotional and intellectual formation and transformation.
