La mort misteriosa de Dolors Bernabeu
Sala i Cullell, Josep
The mysterious death of the young Dolors Bernabeu, Lolita, which happened in the passage of Escudellers in Barcelona on the night of Friday, August 21, 1925, was one of the most famous criminal cases of the time: it occupied the pages of newspapers for weeks and months, with the press frontally divided between supporters of a suicide and those of a murder, and inspired all kinds of theories and rumours. Finally, however, the case was covered up without the truth being made public, which nevertheless ran underhandedly around the city. And although the people of Barcelona kept the memory of it for several decades, the passage of time and the result of the Spanish Civil War buried the memory. Now, Josep Sala i Cullell has meticulously retraced the case in newspapers and archival documentation and makes a reconstruction full of life, narratively hypnotic, which transports us to a turbulent and exciting Barcelona: a Barcelona of cabarets and gunfights, of salons and slums of the fifth district, and where brilliant young writers such as Pla and Sagarra mix, low-level criminals, big fish of the dictatorship and savvy journalists on the hunt for the exclusive of the decade.
