La montaña blanca
Guarch, G. H.
The white mountain transports us to the creation of the State of Lebanon, between 1909 and 1935, through the eyes of Thomas Harding, an Oxford professor who travels to the East to understand the world that he has only studied in books. Our protagonist will be involved in the historical and political circumstances surrounding the ancient vilayato of Syria, the region known since ancient times as Lebanon, as well as in the events that occurred in the Middle East. As the story unfolds, the reader will be immersed in that complex and unknown world. We will witness the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire with the Armenian Genocide as a backdrop, we will learn about the formation of the State of Israel and we will witness the prominence that the situation in Arabia and Iraq will acquire. Thomas Harding will be integrated with the fatherland of his adoption until he is decisively involved in the construction of the State of Lebanon. Thanks to him, we will learn about the factors that intervened in its creation as well as the complex and difficult relationship between Islam and the West that continues to this day. La Montaña Blanca is a superb work where historical reality leads the reader through the crossroads of politics and diplomacy to understand a territory as exotic as it is exciting. An intense, well-documented, committed and necessary novel.
