After the death of her father, a renowned merchant of old books, Carlota inherits a valuable library that hides more than it teaches and that has been the object of desire by collectors, booksellers and librarians from around the world. With the help of Marta, her partner and a teacher of classical languages, Carlota will try to decipher the mysteries contained in this particular and poisoned inheritance, in which the illusions and the most intimate secrets of her father still dwell like ghosts; she will settle accounts with her past and, at the same time, she will be forced to make decisions capable of changing the course of Spanish literature as well as the size of her current account and the strength of her convictions. A fictional book about real books that reveals with sharp irony the hypocritical nature of cultural heritage, introduces the reader to the universe of ancient books and the industry that surrounds them, and delves into the enigmatic origin of Lazarillo de Tormes, about which Carlota will find disturbing clues hidden in her father's library.
