Published in 1912, "The War of the Buttons" portrays the fierce and fun rivalry between the boys of two neighboring towns: Longeverne and Velrans. Full of plans and counterplans, of snares and ambushes, of malice and plates, of furious enmity and companionship, of crosses of insults and expletives that carry the reader in the air, it is not the minor merit of this little work by Louis Pergaud to get a portrait unforgettable of an age that we all recognize precisely by evoking it from the point of view of its protagonists, some of whom we have all been, to a greater or lesser extent, once.
