La gripe española, 1918-1919

Porras Gallo, María Isabel

The 1918-1919 flu pandemic is considered the deadliest global epidemic crisis of the 20th century. Marked by the influence of the Great War (which mobilized goods, soldiers and workers by countries such as China, the United States, France or Sierra Leone), more than a hundred years later, researchers and specialists continue to wonder about its origin and the reasons for its intensity. . Despite the unjust nickname of "Spanish" (due to the military censorship imposed in the belligerent countries), this disease also raged in our country, where it had up to three major outbreaks, which were especially cruel to the capital and its surroundings. The experience of the pandemic transformed society in almost every order and its impact lasted decades and conditioned the response to the following pandemics.
