Early 1990s. The young Kiona lives a sibylline life in Manihiki, a small island in the southern Pacific Ocean, and one of the most isolated places in the world. Kiona works in the family freediving business, keeping an eye on oysters and harvesting black pearls. One morning a luxurious yacht crashes onto the reef that surrounds the island. On the wrecked ship, locals find a wounded man. His name is Erik and he is from Sweden. The ship accident is but the beginning of an extraordinary story spanning five years and four continents. It is the story that raises questions about humanity's search for meaning and belonging, about the price of things in this life and above all, how far we are willing to go for the people we love.
