La fuente del francés

Bargues, Elena

Cantabria, 1891. Charles Webster is an American diplomat who is staying at the La Fuente del Francés spa, where he has met a potential arms buyer. There he will meet two Cuban women who will mark her life: Mrs. de Carvajal, belonging to a family of rich landowners and trapped in an unhappy marriage, and her aunt, Mrs. Emelina. At the same time, rumors are spreading in the resort about the imminent arrival of the liberal opposition leader, Sagasta, at a time when Cánovas' protectionist tariff policy endangers the loyalty of the last Spanish colonies: Cuba and Puerto Rico. But everything is altered when a rich Cuban tobacco planter is found murdered and a bomb is found in the room of an employee, who turns out to be a known anarchist. Webster, fearing that it is a political plot, decides to start an investigation that will lead him to unexpected conclusions as he delves into the lives of the guests. Meanwhile, Mrs. de Carvajal will be forced to emerge from her lethargy and make desperate decisions that will change her life.
