In the summer of 1862 a group of young artists, guided by the passionate and brilliant Edward Radcliffe, traveled to Birchwood Manor, a mansion in Berkshire. They have a plan: to live a few months in solitary confinement and be carried away by inspiration and creativity. However, when summer comes to an end, one woman has died from a gunshot wound and another has disappeared, an invaluable gem has been lost and Edward Radcliffe's life has collapsed. About one hundred and fifty years later, Elodie Winslow, a young London archivist, discovers a leather wallet containing two objects with no apparent connection: a sepia photograph of a woman of great beauty, dressed in a Victorian dress, and an artist's sketchbook, in which there is a drawing of a two-roofed house by a river.
