Charlotte Wilcox, the daughter of an unfortunate baronet, feels happy in her home and is not worried that, at the age of twenty-three, she will still be single. But her family does not think the same way and pressures her to find a husband to support her. To that end, he travels to Bath and puts himself in the hands of his aunt Margaret, who will instruct her to get a suitable marriage offer.
