La emboscadura
Jünger, Ernst
The forest is the place where we must all face our primal fears and learn to conquer our freedom. In ancient Iceland, a man who had entered into a serious conflict with society (usually over murder) had one recourse left: the ambush. That man withdrew into the woods, became an ambush. There he lived on his own strength, leaning on himself. He became his own priest, his own physician, his own judge. Sometimes his wife accompanied him. The "forest" is here a spiritual, metapolitical place. There are forests in the deserts and there are forests in the cities; there is it in solitude and in the community. The Ambushed is, according to Jünger, the third figure of this century, along with the Unknown Soldier and the Worker. And he is also the unique, sovereign person who stands up to all forms of oppression.
