This book is like lightning in a clear sky. To say that the splendid, eloquent, and uninhibited heroic novel has suddenly returned in an age of almost pathological anti-romanticism would be inadequate. For those of us living in that strange time, the return -and the relief it brings us- is undoubtedly the most important thing. But for the story of the novel itself -a story that goes back to the Odyssey and before the Odyssey- it is not a return, but a step forward or a revolution: the conquest of a new territory.
