Summer 1924. During a glittering high-society party at Riverton Manor, a beautiful lakeside mansion, a promising young poet takes his own life. The only witnesses to this dramatic event, the sisters Hannah and Emmeline Hartford, will never speak to each other again. Winter 1999. Ninety-eight-year-old Grace Bradley, once a maid at Riverton Manor, is visited by a young film director who is making a film about the poet's suicide. That visit summons the ghosts of the past, memories that for decades Grace had relegated to the back of her mind, unable to face them.
