Continuation of The House of Miniatures that focuses on Amsterdam, in 1705, where Thea Brandt is ready to receive adulthood; but on the Herengracht, her father and Aunt Nella don't stop arguing, and the family is selling their furniture so they can eat. The pressure from her is on her to marry a good catch and move up in society. When the young woman receives an invitation to the most exclusive ball in Amsterdam, Nella is beside herself with joy, but experiencing a strange tingle on the back of her neck, she is reminded of the miniaturist who played with her luck eighteen years ago.
