La carta
Maugham, W. Somerset
A young English lawyer settled in Singapore receives a visit from his friend Robert Crosbie, owner of a rubber plantation. The businessman is very upset that his wife, Leslie, has been arrested for the murder of Geoffrey Hammond, a plantation foreman and friend of the family, and he wants to ask the lawyer to take charge of his defense. A priori it does not seem like a very complicated case, especially when Leslie alleges that, on the night of her murder, Geoffrey tried to abuse her by taking advantage of the fact that she was alone in the plantation house. Also, Leslie's testimony, so calm and sensible, seems very convincing, or at least that is the impression of the lawyer until a letter appears.
