La Biblia en España
viajes, aventuras y prisiones de un inglés en su intento de difundir las Escrituras por la Península
Borrow, George Henry
Between 1836 and 1840 (the years of the first Carlist war, the confiscation and the first regency), George Borrow traveled on behalf of the British Bible Society in order to spread the New Testament in an edition without comments and accessible to all. The apostolic vocation of "Don Jorgito el Inglés" (by that name he was known in Madrid) allowed him to travel half of Spain and be the protagonist or witness of multiple incidents - encounters with bandits, arrests and detentions, conspiracies of gypsies (occupied by the mysterious " Affairs of Egypt "), death threats- whose memory he poured, on his return to England, in" The Bible in Spain ", a book that immediately achieved great success and dissemination. Manuel Azaña, translator and prologue in 1921 of the Spanish edition, points out the romantic interest of many adventures, which seem typical of a picaresque book, but above all, it stands out its character as a work of art, of creation, which places it among the best books of its kind.
