La Araucana

La Araucana is an epic poem that narrates the war of the Spaniards against the Araucanian Indians during the conquest of Chile, in the 16th century. Alonso de Ercilla witnessed the events that he would later relate, in verse, and with a clear literary intention. The poem was published in three volumes on his return to Spain and has not stopped being read ever since.
