Rachel Brewster is a slalom skier who, at age eighteen, goes to the national championships in Aspen, Colorado. When she returns to New Hampshire, without having won any medals, she is pregnant. The child, Adam, the protagonist of this novel, conceived in 1941 at the Hotel Jerome in Aspen, will never know the identity of his father. Rachel, for her part, starts working as a ski instructor and, in the long months that she spends away from home, she leaves the child with his peculiar grandparents. Adam will grow up in a family that defies all conventions, including sexual ones, and that avoids questions about the past. However, when in his eighties he returns to the Hotel Jerome in search of answers, Adam will encounter some unexpected ghosts. The unforgettable odyssey that Adam offers us in first person becomes a fresco of the United States, from the 1940s to the second decade of the 21st century, from the Cold War and Vietnam, through the Reagan era and the emergence of AIDS, until we reach the Tea Party and Donald Trump.
