New York, 1920s. On leaving work, a young lawyer hears, through a door, two men fighting. Then a shot and a scream. Alarmed, he bursts into the scene. He finds no one there, neither dead nor alive. After a while, however, he confirms that a murder has been committed: that of the owner of a major bank. Who is the killer? And who is the man who appears in the East River and claims to have fallen down a hole and crossed the Earth?
