L'abadia de Northanger

Austen, Jane

Catherine Morland is a seventeen-year-old who spends her free time reading gothic novels, and in fact always imagines herself starring in exciting adventures. Some friends of the family invite her to Bath, where she meets Isabella Thorpe, a very clever girl, perhaps too much so. Together they will enjoy the social life of the city and attend dances, a circumstance that will allow them to meet Henry Tilney, a very interesting young clergyman. After several days without seeing him around Bath, the young man finally reappears arm in arm with a beautiful young lady, who turns out to be his sister Eleanor, who becomes close friends with Catherine. As the Tinleys are forced to leave Bath due to their father's obligations, they invite Catherine to visit the family estate, Northanger Abbey. Seduced by gothic novels, she imagines it dark, ancient and full of mysteries, and she goes there eager to live dramatic adventures, while everyone around her thinks she should take advantage of the opportunity to find a rich husband.
