This book looks at 250 years of British economic and social history: the rise of the Industrial Revolution, its pioneering role in the world economy, industrialists and producers of raw materials, metropolises and colonial or semi-colonial areas around the world, and its subsequent decline during the 20th century due to its early emergence as a world industrial power. However, it is not possible to understand the history of Great Britain if one does not take into account its role as the axis of that vast empire on which its fortunes were based for so long, its subsequent decline before the push of new economic powers - the United States and Japan - or, its current relations with the European Union.
